Scrimshaw Pens
These beautiful Scrimshaw Pens are made of shed deer or moose antler. These animals shed their antlers in late winter and are found the next spring. Each pen is unique in texture, pen style and scrimshaw design. The scrimshaw design was etched by Kevin Neil. Kevin is well known in Canada for his artwork. Kevin works with a fine needle and jewelers loop to etch the design on the pen. The etching is then outlined with indian ink. There is the most intricate of design and detail incorporated into Kevin's artistry. Have a look at the sea gulls on the Scrimshaw Schooner ship. The antler is turned on a lathe and I take great care to preserve the most attractive features of the "bark" while exposing sufficient enamel for Kevin to etch his scrimshaw design. The sketches are of Nova Scotia salt water birds known as Loons. As Nova Scotia is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, we are tied to our nautical roots. The nautical theme is extended to the beautiful Nova Scotia Scrimshaw Schooner. These pens are works of art and will hold a special place in any pen collection. Selection is limited to those shown here but more will be added later.
